Our homes are more than walls than furniture – they’re the places we rest, heal, and build our lives. Over time, I’ve learned that small changes in the products we use can make a big difference in how our spaces feel. Creating a non-toxic home isn’t about being perfect or overhauling everything at once. It’s about choosing gentler options, one step at a time
Why Non-Toxic Matters
Many of our everyday products, from candles to cleaners, contain chemicals that can have an effect on our health and hormones. For anyone navigating fertility challenges, reducing toxic load can feel especially important. For those who aren’t navigating fertility challenges, decreasing the amount of chemicals in our products can be beneficial as well. But even beyond that, choosing safer swaps can make a home feel lighter, cleaner, and more in tune with nature.
Simple Everyday Swaps
- Candles –> Replace paraffin with soy or beeswax candles scented with essential oils.
- Cleaning Products –> Swap harsh sprays for vinegar based or plant based cleaners. (My favorite brand to use is Branch Basics or homemade mixes are an easy option.)
- Plastics –> Use glass or stainless steel for food storage and water bottles. (This was one of the biggest swaps I made and I think my favorite)
- Skincare –> Choose products with fewer ingredients and no synthetic fragrances (One of the harder swaps in my opinion because our skincare is sacred and disrupting that to find new products is not always easy)
- Laundry –> Opt for fragrance-free detergents or wool dryer balls with a drop of essential oils. (I am still working with this one because for me I didn’t mind the swap to fragrance-free BUT my husband did not care for this swap)
A Few of My Favorite Non-Toxic Brands
Make It Cozy, Not Complicated
Non-toxic living doesn’t mean stripping away comfort. In fact, it can make your home feel more nurturing. Imagine a candlelit evening with a clean, soy candle burning, a cozy blanket washed in a fragrance-free detergent, and a warm cup of tea from a ceramic mug. Simple Swaps, big piece of mind.
Start Small
Pick one area of your home or aspect of your life and start there. As you run out of certain products look for a better option to replace it with. There’s no need to just throw everything away, that would be very expensive. Over time, these small changes will add up to a space that feels safer, softer, and more aligned with the life you are wanting to create.
